Adding type 2 diabetes changes the tirzepatide weight percentage

SURMOUNT-2, in adults with obesity and type 2 diabetes, did not reproduce the weight change reported from the trial that excluded diabetes.

Tirzepatide’s obesity program is not one percentage. SURMOUNT-2 required type 2 diabetes as well as obesity. At 72 weeks, on the treatment-regimen estimand, mean weight change was 12.8 percent at 10 mg, 14.7 percent at 15 mg, and 3.2 percent on placebo. Readers who have already memorized a larger figure from the trial without diabetes are remembering a different entry criterion.

Diabetes is not a footnote

Glucose-lowering medicines, rescue therapy, and a different baseline metabolic state sit inside this protocol. The Lancet paper says the safety pattern resembled other injectable incretin therapies: nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting led the adverse-event list. That sentence is about this exposure, not about every future dose or combination.

Still moving

Dual-agonist evidence is accumulating trial by trial. Accumulation is not permission to average the percentages. The emerging-molecule question is which population a new paper actually enrolled. For SURMOUNT-2 the answer is on NCT04657003 and in PMID 37385275.
